What’s (not) in a name?

I just noticed that another blogger (who I don’t know) linked to my blog on their sidebar. How exciting! Then I noticed that my blog had the longest name of all the 20 or so vegetarian cooking blogs she linked to. Oy.

When my blog was over at blogger it was called veggieheaven. But blogger’s search was totally broken, so I came over here to wordpress. When I moved the blog I decided that veggieheaven was a bit too optimistic and/or egotistical. So I changed it to the current title, which is supposed to reflect more of my nit-picky approach to recipe blogging. When I chose this title, I had no idea that no one, not one of my Phd-pursuing peers, knows what captious means. The only person I’ve met who’d even heard the word captious before was my father. But he didn’t like the title–said captious had overly negative connotations. Derek didn’t like it either–at first. He wanted me to change it to veggiesaurus. I was hesitant–it seems like what you’d call a vegetarian thesaurus or dictionary or something, not a recipe blog. In any case, now he claims captious is fine–it’s grown on him he says.

But I thought I’d ask my loyal readers–all five of you. How’s the name? Too long? Too esoteric? Just right?

If you don’t like it, have any better ideas? I really like vegendary, which is supposed to be a play on vegetarian and legendary, but my brother says it sounds like vegetables and dairy. But isn’t that what I eat???

In any case, I’m counting on you for feedback and/or new ideas. After all, it is the new year. Maybe it’s time for my blog to get a new name.

Ode to Grapefruit

I woke up this morning and the first thought to enter my mind was that grapefruit is woefully underappreciated, and I needed to help remedy this situation by offering rhapsodic praise to this most perfect of all fruits. I searched for “ode to grapefruit” on google and was surprised to find that others have already composed such an ode, such as the one from this site:

O, Noble Sphere of Lustrous Yellow,
Sparking Thoughts both mild and Mellow
of tangy taste and dizzy haste
to stuff my face and wipe the trace
of juice that squirted up my nose;
Of all the citrus fruits serene,
Orange, Lime, and Tangerine,
the One to Beat (O Noble Fellow)
Is the One that’s Large and Yellow.

I thoroughly enjoyed this poem, but must dispute the final two lines. Clearly there has been a typographical error, and it should read “the One to Beat (O Regal Buddy) / Is the One that’s Large and Ruddy.” Oh, and the first two lines as well should probably have red: “O, Noble Sphere of Lustrous Scarlet / Sparking Thoughts both Virgin and Harlot”.

Grapefruit even provoked a young, stuttering and therefore almost completely silent James Earl Jones to find his voice again. So, among grapefruit’s other achievements, without this remarkable fruit clearly star wars could never have been.

Despite all the grapefruit genuflecting, I felt like nothing on the internet quite conveyed my own perspective, so I sat down to write one more ode to grapefruit:

Twenty-seven ruby grapefruits fill my fridgerator.
Certain proof at last of an intelligent creator.

Call for recipes

My friend brought over some Good Earth® tea, which tastes very cinnamon-y to me, and comforting. I would love to make something similar myself. Anyone have a recipe? I looked online for ingredients:

Good Earth® Original Caffeine Free is a blend of Masai(Rooibos), Rose Hips, Chamomile, Cinnamon, Lemon Grass, Peppermint, Papaya, Anise, Orange Peel, Ginger, Artificial and Natural Flavors.

Good Earth® Original Tea & Herb Blend is a blend of Tea, Rose Hips, Chamomile, Cinnamon, Lemon Grass, Peppermint, Papaya, Anise, Orange Peel, Ginger, Artificial and Natural Flavors.

I can buy all of those things at the co-op, except the papaya. I wonder what form of papaya you’d use to make tea?


I bought some “broccoli slaw” off the salad bar at whole foods. (It was soy-free amazingly enough). I just ate it and it was delicious, and tasted very healthy too. But it was expensive. Anyone have the whole foods cookbook? Is the recipe in there? If not, anyone have a similar recipe. It had brococli, black sesame seeds, red bell peppers, carrots and I’m not sure what else, but no soy or dairy!
